How to Export your Location Data

Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide to export your location history from your mobile device, tailored for both Android and iPhone users. Follow these steps to get your location history saved and ready to use!

For Android Users

You can export your location history directly from your Android device’s settings. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Your Phone’s Settings:

    • Open the Settings app on your Android device.

  2. Select “Location > Location Services”:

    • Scroll down and tap Location.

    • Then, select Location Services.

  3. Scroll Down and Tap on “Timeline”:

    • Find and tap Timeline to access your Google Maps location history.

  4. Find “Export Timeline Data”:

    • Look for the Export Timeline Data option within the Timeline screen.

  5. Save Your Timeline:

    • Tap Continue, then Save.

    • A copy of your Timeline will be downloaded to your device, typically in your Downloads folder.

Note: The exact menu names might vary slightly depending on your Android version or device manufacturer (e.g., Samsung, Xiaomi), but the general path should be similar. Ensure location history is enabled in your Google account to have data to export.

For iPhone Users

For iPhone users, you’ll export your location history through the Google Maps app. Here’s the process:

  1. Open Google Maps:

    • Launch the Google Maps app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap on Your Profile Icon:

    • In the top-right corner, tap your profile icon.

  3. Select “Your Timeline”:

    • From the menu, choose Your Timeline to view your location history.

  4. Tap the Hamburger Menu:

    • In the top-right corner of the Timeline screen, tap the hamburger menu (three dots).

  5. Select “Location and Privacy Settings”:

    • From the dropdown, tap Location and Privacy Settings.

  6. Select “Export Timeline Data”:

    • Tap Export Timeline Data and follow the prompts to save the file to your device.

    • The file will typically appear in your Files app.

Note: If you don’t see the “Export Timeline Data” option, ensure your Google Maps app is updated to the latest version. You’ll also need location history enabled in your Google account.

What You’ll Get

Once you’ve followed these steps, your location history will be saved as a JSON file on your device. This file contains the data Google has tracked based on your movements—perfect for backups, analysis, or sharing. Check your Downloads folder (Android) or Files app (iPhone) to find it.

If you run into any issues, double-check that:

  • Location services are turned on.

  • You’re signed into the correct Google account in Google Maps.

  • Your app or device software is up to date.

Now you’ve got your location history exported and ready to go!
